Common Questions

How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is rooted in over 3,000 years of traditional medicine, working by stimulating specific points on the body to engage your nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. From both traditional and modern clinical perspectives, it supports healing through several key mechanisms:

  • Endorphins: Acupuncture stimulates the secretion of endorphins in the body—these are your body’s natural pain killers and are up to 10 times stronger than morphine, which can result in immediate pain relief.
  • Gate Control: Acupuncture closes certain nerve gates by strategically overloading them with impulses, thus reducing pain transmission.
  • Circulatory: Acupuncture increases circulation by causing vasodilation, which helps facilitate healing by bringing fresh blood flow to the area of injury.
  • Neurotransmitters: Acupuncture affects certain neurotransmitter levels such as Serotonin and Noradrenaline to help modulate the stress response. This is why acupuncture is so effective at treating insomnia, anxiety, depression, sugar cravings, and stress-related conditions.

Immunity Augmentation: Acupuncture can boost immunity and can also help regulate immunity in cases involving auto-immune conditions.

What does acupuncture feel like? Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and hair-thin—entirely different from the hollow needles used for blood draws or injections. Most patients feel little to no discomfort when they are placed. You might notice a mild sensation of warmth, heaviness, or a gentle tingle, which is a normal sign that your body is responding to the treatment.

Are the needles safe and sterile?

Yes, absolutely. All acupuncture needles are single-use, medical-grade, sterile, and disposable. They are safely discarded immediately following your session.

Are there any side effects to acupuncture?

Acupuncture is incredibly safe, and adverse side effects are extremely rare. The most common minor side effects include a tiny drop of blood or a slight bruise at a needle site. If a bruise does occur, it is generally painless and will fade away after a few days. Please note that patients taking certain Western medications, such as blood thinners, tend to bruise more easily than others. It is also very common to feel deeply relaxed or a bit sleepy following your session, which is a wonderful sign that your nervous system is calming down.

Can I receive acupuncture if I am already taking prescription medications?

Yes, acupuncture is an excellent complementary therapy. It is completely drug-free and will not interfere with your prescription medications. If we discuss adding custom herbal medicine to your treatment plan, I am fully trained in herb-drug interactions and will ensure any herbal recommendations safely complement your current medical care.

Can I combine acupuncture with other therapies like massage or chiropractic care?

Yes! Traditional Chinese Medicine is an excellent integrative therapy. It works harmoniously alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage to accelerate tissue recovery, reduce inflammation, and help your body hold its adjustments longer.

Do you treat conditions other than physical pain?

Yes, Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system. Over my seven years of clinical practice, I have successfully helped patients with a wide variety of internal and systemic issues. In addition to comprehensive pain management, I specialize in natural fertility support, digestive disorders (like acid reflux and IBS), and emotional well-being, including reducing anxiety, depression, and insomnia by regulating the body’s stress response.

What if I have a complicated condition with multiple concerns?

While it is possible to treat more than one problem at a time with acupuncture, how we focus that treatment is critical. Acupuncture works by stimulating your body’s internal resources to trigger healing; because those resources are finite, trying to address too many issues at once can spread your energy too thin, making the process take much longer. For critical conditions like stroke recovery or facial paralysis, it is vital that we focus on the primary concern first to ensure the best possible outcome.

I ask that you prioritize your top concerns so we can focus our treatment strategy effectively. My goal is to achieve real, lasting results—I am a practitioner, not a “wish box” or a magician, and your body needs time to heal. I never want to “needle you like a cactus”, as over-stimulating the body is counterproductive. By focusing on your most pressing needs first, we build a foundation for your recovery rather than spreading your treatment efforts too thin.

Can acupuncture help with severe back pain or sciatica?

Absolutely. Back pain is one of the most common conditions treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whether your pain is from muscle strain, a bulging disc, or sciatica—where a tight muscle in the buttocks puts the squeeze on the sciatic nerve—acupuncture works to increase local blood flow, reduce inflammation, and trigger the release of your body’s natural painkillers to provide profound relief.

Is acupuncture effective for arthritis and joint stiffness?

Yes. Acupuncture is highly effective for both osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear) and rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune inflammatory condition). The gentle insertion of needles helps to reduce systemic inflammation, ease swelling, and bring fresh circulation to the affected joints. This helps restore mobility and reduce daily pain without the side effects of heavy medications.

What to Expect: Preparing For Your Visit

What should I expect during my complimentary consultation?

Your complimentary 15-minute consultation is a brief, introductory session. It allows me to explain how acupuncture works, assess whether your specific health condition can be treated effectively by me, and outline an estimated number of sessions you will need.

How should I prepare for my appointment?
  • Eat a light snack or meal 1 to 2 hours before your visit—avoid coming on an empty stomach.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that easily allows access to your arms and legs.
  • Avoid heavy caffeine, exercise, or alcohol right before your session.
How long does one session take?

Your initial visit takes about 60 minutes. This allows time for a comprehensive health evaluation, a discussion of your wellness goals, and your first complete acupuncture treatment. Return follow-up visits take around 30-45 minutes, which includes a brief check-in and your deeply relaxing acupuncture session.

What happens during the first actual treatment?

Your first treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, custom diagnosis, and wellness goals. Afterward, you will receive a gentle acupuncture treatment. I normally add the herbs after a few treatments for me to analyze your body clearly, to make a correct diagnosis.

Do I need to undress for the treatment?

In most cases, no. I highly recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing (like workout clothes) so that you can easily roll your sleeves above your elbows and your pant legs above your knees. If we are treating an area like your back or shoulder, proper draping will be used to ensure you are completely comfortable and covered at all times.

Results & Aftercare

How will I feel after the treatment?

Most patients experience a profound sense of relaxation and groundedness. Because acupuncture triggers the release of natural endorphins and calms the nervous system, it is very common to feel a bit sleepy or incredibly relaxed immediately after a session. Some patients notice an immediate surge in energy or pain relief, while others feel the benefits compounding over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Can I drive or go back to work after my appointment?

Yes, absolutely. You are perfectly fine to drive and return to your normal daily routine. However, because the treatments are deeply relaxing, I recommend taking it easy if possible. Try to avoid extremely stressful activities or heavy, intense workouts immediately following your session so your body can fully absorb the benefits of the treatment.

How quickly will I start to see results?

Healing is a highly individualized process. Some patients experience immediate relief from pain and stress after their very first session. For acute issues, you may see significant improvement within just a few visits. For chronic, long-term conditions (like severe arthritis or long-standing digestive issues), treatments are cumulative, meaning each session builds upon the last. During your initial consultation, we will map out a clear timeline for your specific healing journey.

Why do some patients get immediate relief while others feel sore before getting better?

Healing is a highly individualized process. Many patients experience an immediate reduction in pain right after treatment because acupuncture quickly triggers the release of endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers). However, occasionally you might experience mild soreness or a temporary flare-up of symptoms for 24 to 48 hours. This is a normal response sometimes called a “healing crisis.” It happens because acupuncture dramatically increases local blood circulation and “wakes up” tight muscles and nerves. As your body flushes out trapped inflammation and shifts chronic holding patterns, it can temporarily cause discomfort before you experience a significant breakthrough in pain relief.

Important Note: For severe pain conditions, depending on how intense the symptoms are, to be absolutely safe, I always recommend seeing your primary Western medical doctor for a full evaluation first before coming to see me for supportive care.

Diagnostics, Herbal Medicine & Nutrition

Why do you check my pulse and look at my tongue?

These are ancient, highly sensitive diagnostic methods. Your pulse tells me about the strength and function of your internal organs, not just your heart rate. Your tongue acts as a mirror to your internal health—its color, coating, and shape give me a wealth of information. Together, these tools allow me to design a highly individualized treatment program tailored exactly to your unique constitution.

Do you offer herbal medicine or dietary guidance?

Yes. Herbal consultations are included in the treatment, and custom Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal prescriptions are available for $30 per bottle. We also offer 30-minute lifestyle and food consultations ($60) for tailored dietary guidance based on your diagnostic patterns.

What is the difference between Chinese herbal medicine and Western herbs?

Western herbal remedies typically use a single herb to treat a specific symptom (for example, taking Echinacea for a cold). Chinese herbal medicine is much more comprehensive. We use precisely balanced herbal formulas designed to treat the root patterns of illness. These time-tested combinations use herbs that synergize and balance each other, maximizing effectiveness while preventing side effects.
